Portrait photography is a way of temporarily halting time and provides lasting mementoes for families to look back on and remember times gone by. Children especially grow up so quickly and it isn’t until we look back on photographs that we really appreciate how much time has gone by.

Similarly there is nothing we appreciate more than having lasting mementoes of pets that have passed and many will take pride of place all over the world.

Portrait photography is not just simply taking a photograph of a son, daughter or family member, it is being able to capture not just the image of the person but incorporate their nature and personality in an image. It may be a smile or the way they hold their head that characteristically reminds us of them and makes us appreciate the true likeness.

Photographers are apt at being able to capture the exact right image that is just perfect but how do they manage to do this so well. Photographers will spend years perfecting their art and using their own unique abilities and techniques in being able to do just that. Working with children is often unpredictable, especially small children, as they will almost have other ideas rather than pose for a photograph. It is all about engaging them in the process, making them feel comfortable and ultimately capturing an ideal image of them in their true light.

Portrait photography for pets is also a popular way to have lasting mementoes of a treasured and special part of the family. Working with pets can also be unpredictable but a professional photographer will be well used to this and will adapt their techniques accordingly.

When we look back over photographs of ourselves and family members, there is always times when we feel our true likeness has not been portrayed in the photograph, of course we know that the picture is of ourselves but the way we smile or the way we hold our head may not be characteristic of our true nature. This often happens in portrait photography when we are not at ease and comfortable.  A good professional photographer will instantly put us at ease which allows them to perform their job and create excellent images of a family or a portrait of one person.

The internet is an excellent place to start looking for portrait photographers and many will have lots of information and examples of past photographs they have taken which will give you a good idea of the quality of their work.
